How to Stay Keto on Thanksgiving

It can be difficult to stick to your low-carb or keto diet during the holidays. This is especially true on Thanksgiving when food is the main focus. It doesn't need to be.

This post contains tips and tricks on how to keep keto during Thanksgiving.

[feast_advanced_jump_to]

1. Contact the host to educate yourself

Contact the host to find out what food will be served at the event. You will have a better understanding of the temptations that will be available.

Plan your dinner after you have decided what to eat. Plan how much you will eat of each dish.

Plan to eat one of your favorite foods that is not keto.

If you want to follow a keto sticker diet or know that you can't eat just one bite, avoid these dishes.

If you're with someone else, they can even prepare a meal for you so that you don’t have to spend as much time in front of the dishes.

You could prepare a small portion of one of your favorite dishes that is not keto.

Ask the host to allow you to bring a low carb version of the dish. So, those who want less carbs can also enjoy the dish.

This blog post provides smaller portions of keto Thanksgiving dishes.

2. Desserts are always welcome!

My pumpkin pie recipe.

Bring your own Thanksgiving dessert if you want to avoid the extra sugar and carbs.

This will help you if you are aware that desserts are your weakness.

Make enough dessert to share or just make one for yourself.

I have a recipe for pumpkin pie that serves two people. You can also share pumpkin cookie, which tastes like pumpkin pie. These links will take you directly to the recipes.

Fit to Serve Group has compiled a list with other Keto Thanksgiving Desserts.

3. Bring Your Favorite Ketofied Recipe

Make this dish if you have a Thanksgiving favorite that isn't low carb, or even keto. Bring it to the dinner. You can make enough to feed everyone or yourself.

You could also bring everyone a low-carb and keto dessert to try. Most of the times, I've seen a variety of desserts that guests can choose from.

Wholesome Yum has compiled all her Thanksgiving recipes into one place. You can get some inspiration by checking out this site.

Tip #15 also includes the side dishes that people typically enjoy at Thanksgiving.

4. Saying No in a Nice Way

Many people find it difficult to say no, especially when they are asked by a relative or friend who really wants them to try their food.

It is fine to politely refuse. Tell them that you eat a certain way in order to heal your body or whatever else you wish to say.

It is not necessary to give someone the okay just to be polite. You can be nice to your friends and family while still following the keto diet.

Very Well Fit has a post that will guide you through the steps to saying no to food pushers.

5. Don't Go Hungry

To avoid spending too much money, follow the same rules when you go to the supermarket. You'll find it harder to refuse yourself if you are hungry at an event that offers delicious food.

Because you were hungry, your motivation to eat healthy isn't as strong as it should be.

6. Sleep Enough

If you do not get enough sleep, your hunger levels are higher (source). If you do not get enough sleep, you will be more likely to want more food and possibly more carbohydrates.

7. Stay Hydrated

It's sometimes easy to confuse hunger with thirst. Keep a bottle or glass of water nearby if you've eaten enough.

Water is the best thing to drink.

It can get boring, especially if you only drink water during a special event.

You can list the drinks in the next section.

8. Enjoy These Drinks

Brandy Old Fashioned Drink

Enjoy these keto-friendly beverages at your Thanksgiving celebration.

  • Diet Sodas
  • Low-Carb Beers
  • White Claw
  • Zero Carb Spirits
    • Vodka
    • Whiskey
    • Brandy
    • Gin
    • Tequila
    • Rum
  • Dry wines typically contain 2 grams of carbohydrates
  • Keto Brandy Old Fashioned: Instead of using water, use diet Sprite or diet Club soda to create a Brandy Old Fashioned beverage from Wisconsin and add more brandy.
  • Keto Moscow Mule
  • Keto Cranberry Cocktail
  • Keto Hot Toddy

9. Load up Turkey

Turkey is fine on the Keto diet. It is also a good choice for Thanksgiving dinner. I often add butter to my turkey slice.

10. Enjoy Low Carb Vegetables

Roasted Brussels Sprouts make a delicious side dish that you can enjoy during Thanksgiving. Please ask the person who made this dish what the ingredients were.

Some people add honey, sugar or even cranberries. They should be fine if they don't contain any sweeteners.

A 1/2 cup of traditional green bean casserole contains 6 grams of carbohydrates (source). This dish can be enjoyed by those who are on a ketogenic diet.

Roasted cherry tomatoes, another popular side dish, contains 6 grams of carbohydrates per 3/4 cup (source).

Many people bring in a tray with uncooked vegetables. You can put broccoli and cauliflower on these trays.

11. Keto-Friendly Thanksgiving appetizers

Eat keto-friendly snack foods before your main meal. Here are some common snacks you might see. You can even bring these.

  • Shrimp
  • Roasted Nuts
  • Olives
  • Deviled Eggs
  • Salami and Cheese
  • Low-Carb Vegetables and Dip
  • Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms

12. You can do it!

It's all about your attitude. You are more likely to stick to your diet if you approach the meal with the confidence that you'll make the right decisions. Your mind has a lot of power.

You can do it if you believe you can. You've already failed if you think you can.

Henry Ford

13. Visualize the meal to see how it will go

Plan for difficult times by thinking about what you will encounter when you arrive.

Remember past Thanksgivings to see if there is anything you remember that would make it difficult to remain keto. Think of a solution to this problem.

Before someone tries to force you to try a new dish, prepare a response. For more information, see tip #4.

14. Enjoy these Thanksgiving foods that you can eat on Keto

  • Turkey
  • Tip #11 contains a variety of appetizers.
  • Green Beans
  • Roasted Brussels sprouts with bacon, asparagus or roasted brussels sprouts
  • Creamed spinach or kale without milk
  • Salads are good, but be careful with the dressing you use. They can contain sugar.

15. You can make a complete keto Thanksgiving meal

You can offer to host a meal at your home and prepare all keto dishes. This will surprise people with the deliciousness of this diet. You can also make the meal for yourself, and then bring it.

Here is a list of keto recipes that people enjoy during Thanksgiving.

  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Sweet Potato Casserole
  • Green Bean Casserole
  • Stuffing/Dressing
  • Sauteed Brussels sprouts with Pancetta
  • Mac and Cheese
  • Turkey Gravy
  • Dinner Rolls
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Apple Pie
  • Pecan Pie

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the first keto week the most difficult?

It can be overwhelming to prepare for your first week on the keto diet. It requires significant lifestyle changes and pushes most people out of their dietary comfort zone. The idea that you're saying goodbye to your favourite high-carb foods can be intimidating.

But don't fear! Don't worry! With the right support and information, this will be one the most rewarding weeks you ever have. With perseverance and dedication, you can not only survive, but thrive on ketogenic eating.

You need to be patient as it takes some time to adjust to a new diet. While you may feel groggy while you adjust to the lower-carb lifestyle, don't despair! Consuming healthy fats, low-sugar fruits and vegetables will replenish energy stores and help you control your portions.

It is important to remember that this won't last forever. Once your body adjusts, your cravings for high sugar carbs will ease. Hunger will naturally subside and your metabolism will remain energized throughout your day.

The key to making this daunting task manageable is mental fortitude. You can also take tangible steps before entering ketosis.

Can you eat oatmeal on keto?

It can be difficult to find answers for unanswered questions. Many people feel lost and overwhelmed when it comes down to choosing the right foods for the keto diet. Especially with items like oatmeal, which is full of carbs.

It is possible to successfully incorporate oatmeal into a Keto lifestyle, despite what the popular opinion may say. It all comes down to the type of oatmeal and how much.

To find a keto-approved oatmeal recipe, you need to examine the ingredients such as nuts, seeds, and low-carb additions that combine into one delicious, nutritious meal. Pure oatmeal is high in fibre, proteins, vitamins, minerals, which makes them a great choice for keto.

In addition to being mindful of portion sizes, oats should be added to your daily meals. You don't need to run a marathon, or eat too many overnight meals. Instead, you can exercise self-control and limit your portions while maximising flavour with innovative ingredients like coconut milk, cinnamon powder, and chia seeds.

Ultimately oatmeal can provide an unconventional breakfast option within a firmly established nutrition plan like Keto if done with all the right steps in mind. Don't let anyone tell your tastebuds that you have to stick to your principles. Proper prepping can yield serious results.

What is a typical ketogenic meal?

A ketogenic diet is a great way to eat. You can think of it as healthy eating but with a special twist. One twist is to eliminate processed carbs and replace them by high-quality oils and fats.

You'll enjoy the numerous health benefits this diet offers, such as improved energy, cognitive performance and better digestion. You'll also be able enjoy delicious, high-quality meals made with great-tasting ingredients.

So what does an example of a tasty ketogenic meal look like? It could be like grilled salmon served over fresh kale sprinkled with parmesan cheese, paired with roasted cauliflower drizzled in olive oil, and topped off with freshly cut herbs for flavour. It might be an omelet stuffed with bacon bits and bell peppers.

No matter what route you decide to take when it comes time to craft your next keto meal, remember that quality ingredients are key to making any dish a real winner! Let's get creative! Get in the kitchen and discover new flavors while enjoying healthy recipes that can change your life.

Statistics

  • Carbohydrates are the body's preferred source of energy, but on a strict ketogenic diet, less than 5% of energy intake is from carbohydrates (learn more in our beginner's guide for the ketogenic diet). (eatingwell.com)
  • One older study found that the ketogenic diet improved insulin sensitivity by a whopping 75% (25Trusted Source (healthline.com)
  • Recommended Keto diet includes: Keto sushi bites, olives, one or two hard-boiled or deviled eggs, keto-friendly snack bars, 90% dark chocolate, full-fat Greek yogurt mixed with nut butter and cocoa powder, bell peppers, and guacamole (healthline.com)
  • But, a 1-ounce slice of cheese delivers about 30% of the Daily Value for saturated fat, so if you're worried about heart disease, consider portion size when eating cheese. (eatingwell.com)

How To

How to tell if the ketogenic diet is working for you

Understanding the power of your diet starts with exploring potential benefits. You can have a better mental and physical well-being, as well as a healthier body.

One possible solution is the ketogenic diet. But how can you tell if it's working or not? This eating plan is something you should consider if it has any negative effects on your health or lifestyle.

Tracking your responses to the diet plan is one way to do this. Consider how much energy you feel throughout the day. Do you feel fuller longer after meals? Has your digestion improved? Is it better or worse for your sleep quality? Are certain activities more or less uncomfortable?

These are all important points to remember. Take a look at the issues that need attention and make a list. Then track your progress over time to see if any improvements are made. Additionally, monitor metabolic changes such as cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels to see if ketogenic plans are helping you achieve your desired goals.

Last, make sure to check your body composition. Are there any visible changes in fat and/or muscle gain. The ketogenic diet can be beneficial if you experience slow but steady progress over time.
